Why You Need An Attitude Of Gratitude
How many people do you know that are not happy with their lives? How about you are you happy with your life? These days, more than ever, it seems that most people are unhappy with their life. This is not really a surprise as there is a constant bombardment of messages telling us that we could do a lot better.
You must have seen these messages – “you don’t have the right body shape”, “you need to be a lot thinner”, “you need to make a lot more money so that you can have many nice things”, “you need to change your appearance with plastic surgery” and the list goes on.
Social media is a great thing as it allows us to communicate and make new friends across the world. But it also contains images of a perfect life. There are a lot of photographs of people that have perfect bodies or perfect partners. You will also find images of people that have expensive homes and cars.
But here is a really important question – are these people really happy?
You will never be Happy if you always want something
We have all been there. We say to ourselves “if only I had this person or thing in my life then I would be really happy”. And then what happens? You get what you want and start craving something else! You will never be truly happy if you think like this.
What you are doing here is creating missing things in your life. These are holes in your life that unless you fill you cannot be happy. The world will never stop telling you that you need to improve your life in some way. It is how commerce works. So there will always be that new shiny object that can change you from a state of happiness to one of discontent.
So what is the answer?
Appreciate what you have
Happiness is a state of mind and the way that you think about your life will determine whether you will be happy most of the time or not. If your neighbor has just taken delivery of a brand new car and you do not have the money to buy a new car does this make you poor?
In some people’s minds it does. But this is ridiculous. You are not poor you just think that this is the case. The answer to this kind of thinking is to be truly grateful for what you have in your life right now.
Think about the people and things that you have. You have an old car but it gets you to work every day and provides transportation for all of the family. Be grateful that you have this. You have a wonderful partner and a family that you wouldn’t change for anything in the world so be grateful for this as well.
You live in a comfortable home and have a roof over your head to protect you from harsh winters. It doesn’t matter that it may not be in perfect shape or decorated just the way that you want it. Be grateful for your home and the warmth and protection that it provides.
Always remember that there are many things that you can be grateful for. It doesn’t matter how big or small these things are. When you adopt an attitude of gratitude like this you will be a lot happier in your life.
